AppleWorks can save documents in a file formatted as text for use in FileMaker Pro. You can import this text file into an existing FileMaker Pro database. The records you import become the found set. When you import, you can add new records, or update existing or matching records.

Converting your AppleWorks database to FileMaker Pro is a simple two part process

PART 1 - Save Your Data

Open your AppleWorks database and Find the records to convert, then save your AppleWorks database to a format that is recognized by FileMaker Pro.

  1. Choose FILE > SAVE AS
  2. Type a new name for the file
  3. Select a location for the file
  4. Choose the file format ASCII Text from the File Format pop-up menu
  5. Click Save

PART 2 - Import Your Data

Open the FileMaker Pro file you want to import records into.

  1. Choose FILE > IMPORT RECORDS > FILE
  2. In the Open File dialog box, choose the file that contains the data you want to import (the file you saved in Part 1)
  3. Click OPEN
  4. In the Import Field Mapping dialog box, choose a target table.

To import the data into a new table, in the Target drop-down list, choose New Table.  To import data into an existing table, in the Target drop-down list, choose a table name and map fields in your database to the data you want to import.
  5. Click Import

Additional information about importing data and using the Import Field Mapping dialog box can be found in the FileMaker Pro Help topics "About creating a new table for imported data" and "Setting the import action and mapping fields during import".

Note: If you have imported your data into a new table, you will need to rename your fields. If you have an AppleWorks database with many layouts, you will need to re-create these in your FileMaker Pro database.
